We The Kings is an alternative power pop band that is from Bradenton, Florida and was formed in 2007. The band's four members are Travis Clark (lead vocals), Hunter Thomsen (lead guitar), Drew Thomsen (bass guitar), and Danny Duncan (drums). We The Kings have come a long way since 2007. With two full legnth albums and many tours under their belts, they have proved themselves in an unapologetic industry. But where did it all start?
It all began when the guys met in junior high. Even though they became friends, they were in seperate bands. Travis was in a band called Broken Image. He hand picked the guys because they were the pick of the litter. In other words he "Cherry Picked" the other guys. At the same time, the newly formed band faced issues with it's name. There were several other bands in the area called Broken Image. So they changed their name to DeSoto. Shortly after, they changed their name again, due to a lawsuit. DeSoto then became known as the We The Kings that we know today. The band's new name was inspired by their middle school, King Middle School.
By 2007 they were signed to S-Curve Records. On October 2, 2007 We The Kings released their self titled album. On December 8, 2009 their second studio album Smile Kid was released. As of November 14, 2010 WTK have been in NY recording their third album We The Kings have an incredible resume. They have toured with bands like, Boys Like Girls, All Time Low, VersaEmerge, The Cab, The Academy Is, and many other bands. WTK also embarked on the summer fest called "Warped Tour", in 2008, 2009, 2010.
We The Kings is an established band that is still gaining momentum and generating a lot of buzz with hits like Check Yes Juliet and We'll Be A Dream. Who knows what's to come? Just keep an eye on them because they are a band to watch.
Update: We the Kings formed on June 1st 2007.
They say behind every great man there is a great woman, but behind every great band there is a great crew. We The King's Crew is no exception. Their crew is amazing at what they do. They get all of the equipment to and from venues on time, they set up quickly, and they are loyal friends to the quartet.
Some of the crew consits of Hodge, Kiyoshi Muto, Chris Varvaro and Scott Lawson. We have personally met Scott. There are photos of us with him in the photo gallery.
Hodge, 23, became part of the We the Kings family in 2010 at Warped Tour. When asked how he became part of the Kings family he replied, "I've known Scott through Valencia. He called me up in the middle of Warped Tour '10 to see if I could work for them. I said "yes" and the next day i drove out to Scranton, PA to meet the guys and begin work." He prefers to work rather than to have some down time. He said, "I hate spare time. I always want to be working. But when I'm home at my apartment in Long Island i'm usually sleeping, playing xbox, playing guitar, watching NY Rangers hockey, or kickin' it online. I try to go to a lot of shows as well." He says that his taste in music is "mostly heavier stuff." At the moment his top fave are Pantera, Piebald, Fugazi, Men at Work, and Iron Age. Hodge is a lover of music, and says, "I try to give everything a shot."
Life wasn't always about WTK. When Hodge was a child he was a pyromaniac. He says he liked, "To play outside, and light things on fire." He even dreamed of lighting stuff on fire as a profession. He wanted to be a "Rockstar and to play outside and light things on fire." When asked if he wasn't working with WTK what would he be up to these days, he replied, " I'd either be on tour with another band or playing in a band. Or i'd be delivering fried chicken." As for his future he jokes that he would, " Be swimming in his money, Scrooge Mcduck style."
For all the lovely ladies out there, Hodge is "Single, and lookin' to mingle." He says that his type of girl is "One that doesn't annoy the shit out of me." He also says that "If I can fart in front of her, she's in. If she can fart in front of me, she's in. If she hates my farts, I hate her." So, practice your farting skills to win his heart.
His philosophy on life, or little bit of advice is to, "Do what makes YOU happy, take chances, and stay focused."
Kiyoshi Muto, 20, met the Kings on the Glamour Kills tour in 2009. He became part of the WTK family in January of 2010. When he's not working, he says, "I spend most of my spare time playing Call of Duty on xbox, not PS3. ;) Love to cook, eat, and sleep as well." He, like many other crew members, is addicted to Call of Duty. He says, that if he wasn't working for the "Kings" he would be home playing the game. And, it's no suprise that his favorite food is Asian cuisine.
We asked the crew members if they had any pets, and if so what kind and what are their names. Kiyoshi joked, " I used to have a bunch of birds. I also used to have a dog named Speedo but we ate him. JK, he's with a different family now." He confessed that he grew up in the 'Drive Thru Era,' and that he loves Maroon 5 and Third Eye Blind.
Before his WTK days, he thought he would be in college right now. He reveiled to us that when he was a kid he liked to dress up as a ninja. So, from being a ninja, to ditching college, to being on the road with a band, we asked Kiyoshi what he hopes for in the future, and he said, "Living in my own house with a miss hopefully." His philosophy is "To be positive and open-minded.
As for the ladies, Kiyoshi is single. He mentioned that he wants, "A girl that would play Call of Duty with me. Oh, and she can't be stinky." He also states that a girl with a sense of humor is his weakness. So ladies, word of advice: Shower regularly. deodorant well. And, body spray is a plus!
Christopher Michael Varvaro was born on April 15 and is from Long Beach, NY. He has one brother named John. Chris is also an animal lover. He once tweeted, " I treat animals the way most people treat celebrities." So it is no suprise that he has a mini dachshund named Emma.
Chris, or @realtalkchrisv, is the merchandise manager for WTK. He met WTK while working for another band-Metro Station. Even though he has worked for bands like WTK, he says that he listens to R & B and hip hop. He digs John Legend, Big L, KRS-ONE just to name a few. However, he revealed that is favorite artist is "currently Wiz Khalifa." When asked what he would be doing if he wasn't working with WTK , he clued us in to the fact that he is taking some online accounting classes. He says that he would be doing, "something with that."
When asked what his philosophy on life is, Varvaro replied, " You get what you give." So, that goes without saying that if you give a lot, you get a lot and vice versa. He also likes to keep things light. He loves to say, " Keep it positive." When asked what his type of girl was, he said, " You can't have a type, that would be superficial. I just look for someone who is honest and loyal." With that being said, we asked him how a girl could win him over, he simply stated, "by being a good person."
Chris is really a nice, chill guy. He obviously has all of his priorities in check, and is extremely easy to talk to. He's the merch guy, so go and say hey the next time you are buying a few shirts at the next WTK show in your area!
